Hi All!

I have a few updates for you all, including announcements for some upcoming events around the neighborhood.

We’ll be hosting Staryn Wagner, from the city Watershed department, who will tell us about an exciting new trail project and drainage project for Northcrest Blvd. just north of St. John. They’re seeking public input for the design and amenities, so be sure to come to the meeting if you’re interested.

Other guests include Chito Vela, our new city council person, and a representative from APD.

Join by phone: 346 248 7799 US (Houston), then enter the ID and passcode shown above.

Primary Election: Tuesday March 1

Tuesday, March 1 is primary Election Day. If you haven’t already voted, you can vote anywhere in the city. Our closest polling location is the City of Austin Permitting and Development Center, off Middle Fiskville Road. There’s plenty of parking there and tons of space—it’s a great spot for voting (and I hope to be able to host future HNA meetings there too…).

Of note in this primary is we’re voting for our new US Congress person—whoever wins the Democratic Party primary for our area will most likely represent us in the US Congress. Staff members for Rep. Lloyd Doggett, who’s running for this seat, have already contacted me in my capacity as HNA president to ask about what our neighborhood associations main concerns are. I was impressed, especially considering our association has never been contacted by our current Congressman, Michael McCaul. I’m not sure what they can really do for our neighborhood directly, but it’s nice to have someone out there who actually knows we exist. Who knows, he might be willing to attend a meeting of ours sometime, or at least host a town hall (which Michael McCaul has never done in Austin either).

It’s My Park Day: Saturday March 5th, at Highland Park and Reznicek Fields

We’re going back to spread more mulch! All the slots for the IMPD Spring event at our neighborhood park organized by Kate Garza, VP Central Sector, have been filled! It’s so amazing that so many neighbors make it out to these events to keep our neighborhood parks clean and green. Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Save the Date—Saturday May 21: Highland Neighborhood Picnic/Block Party/Gathering:

The HNA board decided to organize an in-person social event tentatively scheduled for Saturday May 21 at 12 PM. We were sad that we couldn’t have this year’s potluck at the upcoming meeting due to not really having a space and Omicron, so we decided to finally do some kind of neighborhood party. There are so many new folks in the neighborhood now, it’d be a great opportunity to connect with neighbors..

Location? TBD. Theme? TBD. But it will involve food, drinks, kids, dog (on leashes probably), and maybe a bouncy house….If you’re interested in helping organize this event contact me at president@highlandneighborhood.org or contact our new secretary, Andrea Grimes at
secretary@highlandneighborhood.org. If we get enough volunteers we can start a Party Committee!
