Winter '23 HNA Newsletter: Neighbors Meet Tuesday, 12/5!

Hello, fellow Highlanders!

It’s time once again for our quarterly general meeting:

Please join the Highland Neighborhood Association for our winter quarterly meeting at ACC Highland (Building 1000, Room 1.2212) this Tuesday, 12/5 from 6-8pm! We’ve done our best to make sure “X” marks the spot for our meeting room on the map above. We’ll also broadcast live on Zoom here.

📅 What’s On the Agenda? 📅

We’re planning to bring y’all some exciting updates on our local public spaces! We’ll be showing a preview of Art in Public Places artist Samara Barks’ conceptual designs for Highland Park, plus we’ll announce plans for a ribon-cutting at T.A. Brown Park in the new year to celebrate the new equipment and landscaping there.

We’ll also have updates from our transit + pedestrian mobility committee — including a discussion about bringing the Safe Streets program to Highland — and updates on local business and residential developments from our Highland Neighborhood Contact Team.

🙋🏾 Join the HNA Board 🙋🏾

We’ll also be (re)electing HNA Board members at this Tuesday’s meeting, as well as opening up for folks who’d like to run for for two important vacancies for secretary and communications director. If you’re a Highland resident who wants to throw your hat in the ring, email us at boardmembers@highlandneighborhood.org.

🏠 Holiday Yard Contest 🏠

Highland neighbor Susan Sellars has graciously agreed to judge our annual holiday yard decoration contest! Be sure to get your festive decor up before she makes the judging rounds on Sunday, December 17th. First, second, and third place winners will receive cash prizes of $40, $30, and $20.

🤧 COVID Boosters and Flu Shots 🤧

‘Tis the season to get the jab: New monovalent COVID boosters are rolling out now. Check out vaccines.gov for a location near you, and the Bridge Access program is available to facilitate no-cost vaccines. Don’t forget to get your flu shot, too!

🚮 Trash + Recycling 🚮

As we head into 2024, lots of neighbors are cleaning out our homes and garages and sprucing up our yards to start fresh in the new year. Keep in mind that the brown bins are for landfill trash, the blue bins are for recycling only, and the green bins are for compost! If you’ve got the wrong items in the wrong bin, your waste won’t be collected.

The City of Austin has a neat online tool that allows residents to track upcoming pickups and bulk and brush collection schedules — just enter your address. Note that waste collection will be affected by the winter holidays, and beginning December 26th, the city will collect your (former) Christmas trees at the curb on your designated compost collection day, or anyone can use the drop-off point at Zilker Park!

👩🏽‍💻 Let’s Spruce Up the Website 👩🏽‍💻

We’re always looking to update our official HNA website with some fresh new photos from Highlanders doing all their favorite Highland things. If you’ve taken a cool photo of a Highland spot or community event, please email it to us at boardmembers@highlandneighborhood.org to be featured on the site, or tag us on Instagram.

That’s all for now!

Cheers,
Andrea
HNA Board President
